Why is Activated Carbon Used in Ultrapure Water Production?

Although ultrapure water purification technologies are now quite mature, certain contaminants may still remain that are difficult to eliminate. For instance, residual substances (such as specific chemical traces) may persist within the piping and vessels of the purification equipment itself. These residual contaminants can adversely affect the water's electrical properties and flow characteristics, as well as interfere with the proper functioning of certain conductive components within the system.


This is where activated carbon plays a pivotal role. Activated carbon is a highly efficient adsorbent capable of capturing gases, liquids, and various impurities. It effectively removes residual contaminants—such as specific organic traces—that may still be present in ultrapure water, thereby further purifying the water and enhancing both its purity and electrical resistivity.


Typically, activated carbon filtration is implemented as the final stage in the ultrapure water treatment process. The activated carbon is packed into a filter unit; as the water flows through this medium, impurities and organic compounds are adsorbed onto the surface of the carbon particles and thereby removed. This method is highly efficient, cost-effective, and easy to implement.
